SEO opportunities

A place for things you spotted that might become work, with impact and effort, evidence and a clear route to a task.

What an opportunity is

An opportunity is something you noticed that might be worth doing: pages ranking on the second page, a missing schema type, a competitor’s link source. It is not a task yet, because you have not decided to do it. Keeping opportunities separate stops your task list filling up with maybes.

Log one

  1. Open SEO Opportunities in the SEO Ops menu and add one, or log it from a client.
  2. Give it a title and, if relevant, a URL or source.
  3. Choose a type: technical, content, keyword, internal linking, backlink, digital PR, local, competitor, SERP, conversion, LLM/GEO or other.
  4. Rate its impact and effort as Low, Medium or High.
  5. Attach evidence, such as a screenshot or an export, or link to it.

A Screaming Frog Internal: All import creates opportunities for you. See Importing a crawl.

Moving it along

Each opportunity has a status: Identified, Investigating, Planned, In progress, Completed or Rejected. The filters at the top of the list narrow by client, type, impact, effort and status, so “high impact, low effort, still Identified” takes two clicks.

Convert it to a task

When an opportunity is worth doing, Convert to task creates a task from it. The task keeps a link back to where it came from, so anyone can see the reasoning later. Convert opportunity is also available from the quick actions.

Using impact and effort

Impact against effort is the simplest way to choose. High impact with low effort is where to start. High impact with high effort becomes a campaign or a strategy objective. Low impact with high effort is a good candidate for Rejected, and the record of why is worth keeping.

An example

An illustration, not a real client. While reviewing Search Console you notice eight service pages sitting on the second page of results for their main queries. You log one opportunity: type Keyword, impact High, effort Medium, with a screenshot of the queries as evidence. A colleague comments that two of the pages overlap. You set the status to Investigating, then Planned, and convert it into a task for the content team with the evidence attached.

A monthly review of the list

  • Filter for Identified with High impact. Decide on each: investigate, plan, or reject.
  • Move anything stuck in Investigating forward or out.
  • Reject what you will not do, with a one-line reason, so it does not reappear as a new idea next month.
  • Pick the best two or three to convert, so the task list does not grow faster than the team can work.

Evidence that makes an opportunity convincing

  • A screenshot or export showing the problem or gap.
  • The URL, query or competitor involved.
  • A rough size of the prize, such as impressions or search volume, when you have it.

Common questions

Do clients see opportunities?

No. Opportunities are internal. If one becomes a task and you share the task, the client sees that.

Can the team comment on an opportunity?

Yes. Each has comments and an evidence files section. See Comments and mentions.
